Corner Block Studio by Natalie Lane

Corner Block Studio is the clever creator behind a host of minimalist wooden wall frames that I quite suspect, is threatening to revolutionise our humble wall picture frame.

Wouldn’t it be nice to return from a holiday and be triggered by a creative business idea? Simply from wanting to fill a need of your own that wasn’t satisfied yet by what’s on offer? For the fresh-faced Natalie Lane whom I had the pleasure of chatting up at the Finders Keepers Market Brisbane 2016, it all began years ago after returning from her travels in India. A lightbulb moment was sparked when she wished she could openly display a pictorial book of her ‘travel gram’. No doubt to spark conversation when she has people over, or just to regularly reminisce her memorable sojourn in India.

I was curiously poking around the Corner Block Studio stall at the latest Finders Keepers Market Brisbane 2016 when she cheerily asked,”Would you like me to show you how it works?” Of course I was only too glad she asked! I can spot a hands-on woman right away when I see one, right there when she surprised me with her easy candour and wonderful smile. With an easy lift up of the thick woven cord, she was only too happy to be able to demonstrate how her ingenious frame works so well even with the thick and heavy coffee table book on display.

Open your mind to memories
Photogenic Natalie, who appears more like she stepped out of a fashion magazine advertising vintage fashion than one who trained technically as an Industrial Designer, is more than meets the eye. She’s the clever creator behind a host of minimalist wooden wall frames that I quite suspect, is threatening to revolutionise our humble wall picture frame. You see, she’s asking us to keep our personal photo books, magazines, coffee table books and paperback novels all OPEN. Yes, not closed, love: open and set your memories and inspiration free. And what a rad idea, isn’t it.

Instead of shelving them literally and forgetting to ogle at them regularly, especially if it happens to be that stunning candid shot of your happiest self. Why not be reminded that life should be lived and beauty appreciated as daily sustenance, its display preferably in ‘butterfly style’ i.e. clamped open with frames made using sustainably sourced timber.

Anesbury: Corner Block Studio

Just what on earth is the Anesbury?
I’m really talking about Natalie’s debut innovation; the Anesbury Book Frame; a chic-looking minimalist frame (in lieu of a shadow box frame perhaps?) to display the open pages of any book on the wall.  The Anesbury is adjustable to fit any width of books and magazines, including the super thick spines of your handsome coffee table books and cookbooks or even photo albums.

Sustainable Design & Manufacturing
Her choice of natural timbers for her frames combines her philosophy of sustainable manufacturing with the timeless beauty of natural hardwoods as a core material. I reckon it’ll complement any interior style from eclectic shabby chic to contemporary modernist home interiors.

You’ll also appreciate that Natalie’s brand, Corner Block Studio, only selects timber that preserves our land’s natural spaces.  Their first collection of frames were made from recycled Australian hardwood that had been salvaged from demolition projects from houses, wharves and wool sheds.

Studio & Workshop
Natalie lovingly handcrafts each frame in her home studio and workshop that she runs with her husband who’s also her business partner. Corner Block Studio is a spin on the actual residence they keep, which is surprise surprise…just around that corner block! She describes their design aesthetic as ‘minimal and timeless’; letting the featured book take centre stage on the wall.  Using her frames is a great way to regularly cherish those treasured memories. Simply switch your book or photo display for a stylish update whenever you fancy.

New Range for Framing & Displaying Cards & Records
The Corner Block Studio’s range has since grown to include frames for showcasing your best-loved music records or greeting cards. Corner Block Studio also stocks a line-up of beautiful and minimalist-looking (of course) hand-sketched greeting cards on its website made by Natalie.

Limited Time Only FREE Shipping
She’s offering a limited-time only free shipping (within Australia only). The frame easily folds and stores well in a postal tube with the careful protective packaging Natalie uses to ship them. Contact Natalie for more details on international shipping costs.

If you’ve missed seeing the Anesbury in action at the last Finders Keepers Market in Brisbane, you can catch the stylish Corner Block Studio duo with their gorgeous frames again at the upcoming QAGOMA Winter Design Market on Saturday 30 July 2016 (9am-4pm at the GOMA Forecourt).
